In 1984, Soviet software programmer Alexey Pajitnov invented the iconic puzzle game Tetris. In the late 1980s, amid a legal battle over the ownership of the rights, many corporations made it accessible for use on a wide range of platforms. Tetris has been available on Nintendo systems for quite some time prior to the 1996 founding of the Tetris Company by Pajitnov and Henk Rogers to manage license.
In Tetris, lines are formed by shifting the falling pieces of varying shapes (tetrominoes) throughout the playing area. After a player completes a line, it disappears and they get points; however, they may continue playing by filling in the empty spots. The game is ended when the uncleared lines reach the highest point of the playing field. A higher score may be achieved by purchasing extra time. To win a multiplayer game, you need to outlast your opponents, and in certain variations, you can even punish them if you complete a lot of lines before they do.
